Is your cellphone ready for the November 1 law change? This affects all cellphone users who drive.
From the deadline of Sunday, November 1, if you want to send and receive calls from your cellphone while driving you will have to use a securely mounted hands-free kit in your car. In a nutshell the law states the following:
- While you are driving you can send, receive and end calls from a cellphone if you:
- Have your phone secured in a cradle and can easily press a button to answer or end a call (this is suitable for when the phone is on speaker).
- Make a call and are quick, use the cellphone infrequently and do not endanger any other road user.
- Are using a remote or hard wired connection e.g. Bluetooth earpiece or Bluetooth receiver (your phone does not have to be secured to receive a call)
- Are using voice recognition (your phone must be secured) You can not send or receive texts while driving.
- The only time you can hold your phone to make or receive a call is if you are in a genuine emergency or are stationary at a roadblock e.g an accident.
- You can not hold your phone to make a call when you are stationary in the normal flow of traffic e.g traffic lights or intersections.
